Benahavis School - Education in Benahavis
The enrolment process for the guarderia takes place from April 1st till 29th and places should be applied for at the town hall. Places for 2011/12 at the school can be applied for at the school this month.
Responsibility for educational services
Primary responsibility for the education system in Benahavis lies with the Junta de Andalucía. However, the town hall pays for school maintenance and improvements but is dependent on the Consejeria de Educacion to allow the school to provide a service such as increased teaching hours.
Can a school meal type system be introduced to help working parents?
The provision of school meals is a service the Ayuntamiento would like to see introduced and to this aim the Ayuntamiento have been talking with the Junta de Andalucía for nearly 2 years. Discussions are continuing and it is hoped that the Junta de Andalucía will approve a service of this type in 2011.
Is there a scheme to help with school materials and other costs?
Student’s books including secondary school books are paid for by the Ayuntamiento. The travel issues of secondary school students studying in San Pedro, has been helped by providing a free bus to take them to and from school. For students keen on further education a grant scheme has recently been approved to help Benahavis kids attend further education at public universities.
The Ayuntamiento de Benahavis also provides support for extra-curricular activities such as Spanish/English lessons, painting, handicrafts, golf, karate, football, swimming, tennis classes and for buses when the kids go on an excursion.
In a similar way, the local kindergarten is maintained by the Ayuntamiento who have recently built an extension, although it is the Junta de Andalucía who manage it in terms of children’s admittance.
